DMA Parallel Plate Dynamic Rheology (3 Temperatures)

Test ID

A dynamic mechanical analyzer is used. A test specimen in the form of a circular disk is sandwiched between parallel plates, at temperature. The top plate is oscillated over a frequency range of 0.1 to 500 rad/s, at constant strain. The torque transmitted through the specimen is measured. This is used to calculate the G and G curves, as well as a complex viscosity. Measurements are taken over a range of 3 temperatures using the same sample.
Samples in powder, fluid or pellet forms can also be used. Tests can be performed at more temperatures for additional cost.
ASTM D4440
ISO 6721
Complex viscosity v. frequency is reported for each test temperature. The G' and G" data can also be supplied. This data appears in Matereality as Melt Rheology by

Parallel plates result in a constantly varying stress field along the radius and are not as precise as cone and plate measurements. However, they are considered adequate for many purposes and present a more economical means of obtaining dynamic data.
