Poisson’s Ratio and Tensile Modulus (2-3 Direction)
Test ID
M-102
Description
A universal testing machine (UTM) is used to determine the Poisson's ratio (the ratio of transverse strain to axial strain resulting from uniform axial stress below the elastic limit of the material)and tensile modulus in the cross flow direction. Specimens are cut in the cross-flow (90 degree) orientiation. One extensometer is attached to the dogbone in the axial direction to record the change in length. A second extensometer is attached horizontally to record changes in the thickness direction as the transverse strain. The Poisson's ratio is calculated based on a plot of transverse strain versus axial strain.
Options
Specimens are machined dogbones or straight-sided specimens. Measurements in the 1-2 direction can be made per test [M-101].

Application
Poisson's ratio is used for the design of structures in which all dimensional changes resulting from the application of force need to be taken into account and in the application of the generalized theory of elasticity to structural analysis. This variation of the test is used when material anisotropy is suspected.
