Description
This test determines the temperature at which a specified needle penetration occurs under a given load. A flat specimen, is placed in an oil bath which is heated at a constant rate and subjected to a standard load with a needle indenter. The temperature at which the specimen has deflected the specified amount is recorded.

Application
The Vicat softening temperature is often given in material specifications. The test is not recommended for softer materials or materials having a wide Vicat softening range.
