Poisson’s Ratio and Tensile Modulus
Test ID
M-101
Description
A universal testing machine (UTM) is used to determine and report the Poisson's ratio (the ratio of transverse strain to axial strain resulting from uniform axial stress below the elastic limit of the material). Tensile Modulus (test [M-011]) is also reported. The sample is loaded between the grips of the UTM. One extensometer is attached to the dogbone in axial direction to record the change in length. A second extensometer is attached horizontally to record the transverse strain. Specimen is put under load, and simultaneous load and strain measurements are taken. The Poisson's ratio is calculated based on a plot of the transverse strain versus the axial strain.
Options
Specimens are typically molded or cut dogbones, but straight-sided specimens may also be used. For anisotropic samples, specimens can be machined in various orientations to obtain different Poisson's Ratios as needed.

Application
Poisson's ratio is used for the design of structures in which all dimensional changes resulting from the application of force need to be taken into account, and in the application of the generalized theory of elasticity to structural analysis.
