Very High Shear Capillary Rheology (1 Temperature)

Test ID

R-013

Description

Due to the need for a small diameter die, this test can only be performed on unfilled materials. The sample, dried if needed, is loaded into a preheated test barrel of a capillary rheometer. A range of flow rates is used, attempting to cover a shear rate range of 100-175,000 /s. A smaller diameter die is used to achieve the higher shear rates. Pressure drop across the die is measured for each flow rate, and viscosity-shear rate data are calculated. Weissenberg-Rabinowitsch corrections are performed.

Options

Pressure can also be made using a load cell instead of a pressure transducer.

Standards

  • ASTM D3835

Data

Shear Viscosity v. Shear Rate. This data appears in Matereality as Capillary Viscosity.

Replicates

Number of times this test is repeated: 1

Samples

0.5 kg of pellets [details]

Application

This test provides a fundamental measure of the flow characteristics of a plastic. Data can describe the dependency of viscosity on shear rate. Tests at multiple temperatures yield temperature dependency of viscosity.
