DMA Cone and Plate Steady Shear Rheology (1 Temperature)
Test ID
R-021
Description
A dynamic mechanical analyzer is used. A test specimen in the form of a circular disk is sandwiched between the cone and plate of the apparatus, at temperature. The cone is rotated with respect to the plate at a constant shear rate and the torque transmitted through the specimen is measured. This is used to calculate the shear viscosity.
Options
Samples in powder, fluid or pellet forms can also be used.
Standards
- ASTM D4440
- ISO 6721-10
Data
Complex Viscosity v. Frequency, Strain Sweep. This data appears in Matereality as Melt Rheology by DMA.
Replicates
Number of times this test is repeated: 1
Samples
2 plate rheology discs [details]
Application
Such viscosity data is useful for the determination of low shear viscosity. It provides a good determination of the zero shear viscosity, a measure that correlates strongly to molecular weight. It is also useful for characterizing processes, such as rotational molding, where very low shear rates are observed.
